What constitutes a responsible, ethical, complex and respectful image of others starts with your sources of information. The images you create should be developed through careful research including the environment and time period. You need to be aware of stereotypes and false information. I feel while creating an image, it will be more responsible to communicate with the people you intend to represent so you don’t give a false sense of authenticity or truth. You want to remain historically accurate.

I agree with Sean. I think the research should be broad enough so that you fairly represent the group and do not pigeon-hole them based on minimal observations.

What constitutes a responsible, ethical, complex and respectful image of others is a social construction that changes over time.

I am not sure what Adam means; ultimately what needs to be created within the story is an accurate and nuanced representation of the society in which the character finds himself. Through this character's responses to these circumstances and his pursuit of his ambitions, what should emerge is a recognizable human being, one whose struggle for dignity and meaning in life resonates in the viewer, making the other a actual person, and reminding the audience that the definition of "otherness" is as much in our minds as in reality.
